University of San Francisco | Office of the President
Members of the USF Community,
It is my sad duty to inform you that John Schlegel, S.J., former president of the university, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 15, ending his courageous bout with pancreatic cancer. In a recent letter to friends, Fr. John expressed thanks for his life of meaningful interactions with students, alumni, parishioners, and friends throughout his ministry and said, “Because of you, I do not fear death.” His example has been inspiring to many.
During Fr. Schlegel’s presidency from 1991–2000, the university benefited from significant enrollment growth, a successful campaign that funded the Geschke Learning Resource Center and Dorraine Zief Law Library, and an award-winning upgrade to the Hilltop campus landscape. Fr. John also provided strong leadership to building a truly multicultural campus. Appropriately, the John P. Schlegel, S.J., Endowed Scholarship for underrepresented undergraduates is awarded annually.
